Until 2009 there had been no contemporary dance festival in Australia since the Green Mill Project in 1997. To fill this void the "Three Houses" of Melbourne came together to stage Dance Massive in 2009. The Malthouse, Arts House and Dancehouse joined forces to present contemporary dance at their venues for two weeks. Although based in Melbourne, dancers and choreographers from around Australia attended. Arts festivals around Australia have for many years programmed contemporary dance and these are often the best times to see the most exciting international performers.
