Over the last few months of the show we tried to focus on the contemporary dancers and the contemporary dance routines. It became a little difficult as the general approach to choreography on the show could politely be described as "fusion", or less politely as "mish-mash". Sometimes it was hard to tell where one style began and another ended. As Reality Raver, the most consistent blogger of the show, asked "Can someone explain the difference to me between lyrical jazz and contemporary?" Damn, I think that might be our job, RR! In fact there's probably a wider gulf between the muscular contemporary of Garry Stewart and the gentler contemporary of Mia Michaels. But the fact that Garry Stewart lent his talents to the show boosted its credibility and gives Garry a very big tick (not that he needs it). Contemporary dance is a broad church and there is no clear dividing line between contemporary and many other dance forms. Contemporary ballet crosses over, jazz and hip hop borrow from and influence contemporary styles and even the occasional bit of gymnastics isn't out of place (though not the backflips). It's impossible to be a purist when dealing with this show and so we've included as many pieces as we could, even including some work from Supple who, despite being labelled hip hop, was sometimes cool enough to be in our gang. In many of the episode summaries below you'll find comments from Reality Raver (also featured on Blogging So You Think You Can Dance) who did a great job of covering the show. You'll also find links to YouTube videos of the specific pieces (when these haven't been removed by the copyright owners). What you won't find is info the results of the voting or any of the episodes before the top 20 performed. For more information about the show you should have a look at the official site and the Wikipedia entry. | ||||||||
